| Rams Crew Team Rockford crew team starts season strong
Candy Burris
In a test of strength and endurance, the Rockford High School crew team claimed first place at the Grand Rapids Spring Sprints Saturday at Forest Hills Central High School.
Rowing on Concept 2 Indoor Erg machines, crew members had to row against 76 other rowers in a 1500- or 2000-meter race to gain points for their teams. The Grand Rapids Spring Sprints is usually the official "start" of the rowing season, as West Michigan athletes gather to test their overall condition and rowing skill. The fitness level of the team proved strong as Rockford had top-10 placers in seven of the eight categories.
The Rams will take to the water on April 1 in a dual meet against Grand Rapids Boat Club at the Rockford Boathouse at 4:30 p.m.
Teams from across Michigan and northern Indiana and Illinois will compete in the Grand Rapids Regatta on Saturday, April 19, at Riverside Park. The regatta will run through the day, with team heats beginning at 9 a.m. and finals starting at 1 p.m.
The public is welcome to attend both events - there is no charge for admission.
