Ram girls track captures state runner-up honors
The Rockford High School Women's Track and Field team capped a successful season with a Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) State Championship runner-up finish this past Saturday at East Kentwood High School.

They finished one point behind the state champs, Detroit Romulus.

The Rams had individuals in 12 of the meet's 17 events and scored in six of those events.

They scored 12 points in the pole vault when Sarah Birkmeier held onto her individual state title from last year and teammate Danielle Putterman claimed a seventh-place finish. Birkmeier's winning vault of 13 feet established a new Michigan State Finals record as well as a Michigan state record.

The Rams earned 22 of their 37 points in the 4x100 meter, 4x200 meter and 4x400 meter sprint relays. Seniors Krysten Fischer, Emma Breen and Becky Caywood along with sophomore Abby Blanchard won the 4x100 meter event and ran a new RHS school record of 47.97.

Caywood, Breen, Blanchard and Junior Margaret Smiley took fifth in the 4x200 meter relay with a time of 1:43.56. The 4x400 meter relay saw yet another RHS school record when Caywood and Breen paired up with juniors Rachel Jerrils and Katie Carlson to claim second place with a time of 3:54.28.

Jerrils and Kylie Basarabski concluded the scoring for the Rams, placing seventh and eighth in their respective events. Jerrils finished with a time of 58.48 in the 400-meter dash, while Basarabski finished the discus with a throw of 117 feet 7 inches.

Other Rams competed at the MHSAA state finals in a number of events. Putterman competed in the 100 high hurdles while fellow senior Kelcie Severson competed in the 4x800 meter relay and the 1,600-meter run.

Junior Rachel Herald competed in the high jump while classmate Alyssa Durkin competed in the 4x800 meter relay. Sophomores Sarah Neideck, Blanchard and Catie Rietsema competed in the 4x800 meter relay, 200-meter dash and 3,200-meter run, respectively. Freshman Jane Hawks ran the lead-off leg of the 4x800 meter relay.

The Ram girls track and field season included the following accomplishments: championships at the Wyoming Park relays, the Grand Rapids Public School Invitational and Cedar Springs Invitational; runner-up finish at the Dayton Memorial Track Invitational; OK Red Conference Champions, Regional Champions, Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association Team State Champions and MHSAA state finals runner-up.
