Carstar branches out

Kathy Berlin
Reporter

Carstar Collision is expanding to better serve customers with the recent purchase of River Valley Auto Inc.

According to Carstar owner Dan Williams, the March acquisition is a perfect fit with his auto collision and paint business, which just happens to be located two doors down at 260 Northland Dr.

"We believe we can incorporate things from the body shop with an oil change and alignment place," said Williams. "Gordie (LaFontaine, the previous owner) is a fabulous person and just a great guy. His towing company and body shop goes good with our business."

According to Williams, LaFontaine is now going to focus on another business he owns in Kalkaska - Timber Wolf Golf Club.

River Valley has specialized in brake work, alignments, tune-ups, tires, towing and mechanical work. Propane is also available. Both places have established a loyal clientele, and Williams looks forward to continued satisfaction in that department. He plans no major changes in business practices.

"Our specialty has always been customer service," he said. "We take care of the customer and do what's fair for them. We offer pick up and delivery. People are so busy these days. Whatever makes it easier on them, we'll oblige."

Williams lives in Rockford with his wife and three children. He is involved in the community through the Rockford Chamber of Commerce, Rockford Education Foundation, and the lacrosse, wrestling and crew teams, as well as Rockford football and theater.

"We give to the community and the community gives back to us," he said.

Williams has 25 years of experience in the field, having worked for his father's collision business right out of high school in the 1980s. His business partner, John Shattuck, has worked alongside Williams since the beginning. Together, they share a similar business philosophy of treating customers with honesty and fairness.

"Our niche in life is very simple," said Williams. "Customers will not forget you if you do service at that level. I want people to be able to trust us. We believe in service for life and customers for life.

"There's a lot of cool stuff to come."
