Dress the Dolls campaign enjoys another season

United Bank's hope to make this Christmas special was answered again by avid sewers. The bank's seventh year sponsoring the Dress the Dolls campaign was a huge hit with a plethora of dolls dressed to the nines.

The bank purchased 100 dolls and it was the community's job to fashion outfits for them. The outfitted dolls were then displayed at the bank for three weeks to allow the bank's customers to vote for their favorite.

There was a wide variety of themes, including a mechanic with oil smudged on her face from River Valley Auto and a cashier from D&W Fresh Market. One doll came clad in pajamas and held a bag which included a pair of matching pajamas for her new owner. A knitting instructor from Bishop Hills Elder Care Community entered two dolls, just to show her support of the campaign.

The winner of the contest was Christine Green of Rockford, a first-time participant. Her entry was an ice skater, adorned in red and sporting a matching muff and tam.

"How could you choose just one?" asked Green after she found out she was the winner.

Actually, the bank couldn't and neither could its customers. They announced a second-place award this year.

Second place went to Sue McCauley's entry, The Frenz doll. According to United Bank Assistant Manager Kathy Perez, the doll garnered so many votes that the bank decided to award a second-place showing.

"The Frenz doll was quite popular," Perez said. "Many of Frenz's customers voted in support of Sue's doll."

Now the 100 dolls will be donated to 100 lucky clients at the North Kent Service Center(NKSC).

"We are so thankful for this program," said NKSC Executive Director Sandy Waite. "The bank and the community have been so supportive and we look forward to partnering with them in the future. Seeing the smiles on the faces of a mom picking up a special doll for her daughter is priceless."

Extra funds were donated to the NKSC for boys so they could also enjoy the holiday.
