In September 1996 the Rockford Independent Newspaper (The Indy) began its publication with a staff of colleagues who worked together at another newspaper. It was owned by Joanne Klukowski, majority shareholder and publisher, and partner Todd Halterman. Their vision was to provide Rockford with a newspaper that lived their philosophy of "Honesty, Integrity and a Strong Committment to Family Values."
From humble beginnings The Indy has seen tremendous growth over
the years and become highly respected for its accurate reporting and
constant community involvement. Its goal is to bring to loyal readers
the local news of Rockford people, churches, schools, sports, arts,
organizations, and events in a positive manner. The Rockford Independent
has earned the trust of the community.
In 2005 Klukowski became sole owner of The Indy before selling
to Stafford Communications Group (SCG) in May 2005. SCG is a family
owned media company based in Greenville and fits perfectly with the
philosophies of The Independent. All employees feel that it is an honor
and priviledge to serve their neighbors in Rockford.
Since that time SCG has nearly doubled The Indy's circulation to
15,000 copies each week, making it by far Rockford's largest newspaper.
With its newly revamped Web site, rockfordindependent.com, the
Independent has become the premier online source for Rockford news and
information, advertising, commuity links and topped off with a
comprehensive business directory. It's truly a "one stop" information
and shopping guide. The Indy's Web site has it all.
As far as what the future holds for the Rockford Independent
Newspaper, with the community's strong support it will continue to grow.
